How to Apply - Admissions Process, Application Deadlines and Policies

"What artist ever looked at the Belvedere Torso without feeling a warmth of enthusiasm, as from the highest effects of
poetry?  From whence does this proceed?  What is there in this fragment that produces this effect, but the perfection
of this science of abstract form?"  -  Sir Joshua Reynolds, Tenth Discourse to the Royal Academy, 1780

The Admissions Process - ALL COURSES

Studio Escalier is a small, private, family-owned institution. We have been privileged to enroll over 500 people in the last
ten years -- including professional artists, teachers and artistic talents coming from some of the most competitive schools,
universities, arts organizations, companies, and art studios in the world.

From the beginning, our admissions policy has remained exactly the same.

All Studio Escalier courses are enrolled by online application only, including portfolio submission.

For most courses, anyone may apply.

Our historic studio and lectures in Paris, as well as our campus in Argenton-Chateau, are not open to the general public.

Individual interviews -- in person or on the telephone -- are not a part of the admissions process.
We appreciate curiosity, but personal tours and studio visits are not offered to prospective students for any reason.

To protect our (and their) privacy and concentration, our classroom studio is open to currently enrolled students only.
We spend alot of quality time with our students. If you are enrolled in an upcoming program, that's when we'll meet you.

Thanks in advance for your comprehension.

Applications for all courses are published online and linked on this page only, 6 to 8 months before the first day of class.

It is impossible to apply for a class before its priority application and official course description PDF are published online.
We reserve the right to modify the dates, price and description of any course until the online publication of the application PDF.

Admission can be competitive. But the applicant pool does vary, in both size and strength, from season to season and deadline to deadline.

It is normal that both the least experienced and the most talented ones are equally certain they're not good enough to get in.
Please apply. There is no virtue in delaying.

It is also normal that one or two students enter an advanced class with relatively little experience, and then work alongside many advanced students or professionals. That is the intended culture of the school, well within the methodology of the program, and of maximum benefit to both beginner and advanced professional.

All applications and portfolios are reviewed in double-blind competition with one another, immediately after each deadline passes -- not before. Every class is intentionally unique in its artistic mix, and in its average levels of experience and skill.

Most Intensive courses and Winter at the Louvre are now fully enrolled after their priority deadline.

Tuition payment is due paid in full within 3 weeks after admissions notification. See Prices and Payment for details.

If any course is not fully enrolled by the priority deadline, then a final application deadline date will be set, and the process repeats.

Alternates are also nominated as part of the admissions process, in order to fill any last-minute student cancellations, should they occur. If any last-minute alternates are needed, a special notice and deadline will be listed on the relevant course description page, as well as on this How to Apply page.

For all these reasons, it is effectively impossible to enter most of our courses at the last minute.

Deadlines - Intensive Courses

Intensive Courses in Argenton-Chateau are enrolled on three deadlines:

a scholarship deadline (6 months before the first day of class)
a priority deadline (5 months before the first day of class), and
a final deadline (if needed, 2 months before the first day of class).

Scholarship application guidelines and deadlines can be reviewed on the Scholarships and Aid page.

Priority applicants enroll at a published, reduced price (approximately 10% discount).
Priority students are also given first housing preference, in the order applications are received.

Final applicants are enrolled at the full tuition price, after the student cancellation/refund deadline has passed.

Deadlines - All Paris Drawing Programs

December in Paris and Winter at the Louvre are enrolled on two deadlines:

a priority deadline (5 months before the first day of class), and
a final deadline (if needed, 2 months before the first day of class).

Note: There are no scholarships or student aid available for any Paris drawing programs.

Priority applicants enroll at a published, reduced price (approximately 10% discount).

Final applicants are enrolled at the full tuition price, after the student cancellation/refund deadline has passed.

Deadlines - Special Programs

Special Programs are enrolled on two deadlines:

a priority deadline (4 to 6 months before the first day of class), and
a final deadline (if needed, 10 to 12 weeks before the first day of class).

Note: There are no scholarships or student aid available for any Special Programs.

Priority applicants enroll at a published, reduced price (approximately 10% discount).
In Argenton-Chateau, priority students are given first housing preference, in the order applications are received.

Final applicants are enrolled at the full tuition price, after the student cancellation/refund deadline has passed.
